Klimt (Wien 1862 – Neubau 1918) was one of the leading exponents of Art Nouveau. He started as a decorator with numerous commissions for public and private buildings in Austria and abroad.
Then he matched this activity with portrait. He had its golden period after 1900 when the rich Viennese bourgeoisie commissioned him several works. He used to photograph the subjects before making picture. The precision in the rendering of the faces, perhaps the only realistic element of his painting, derives from this habit. In fact, although starting from classical bases, his style evolved from the foundation of the "Viennese Secession" (1899-1903), to the symbolism and the simple mere evocation of reality. His style was elegant and soft; two-dimensionality and the preciousness that has internalized from the study of Byzantine mosaics of Ravenna prevail.
